A Real Wedding

Kelly and CoDY's Wedding AT VILLA CHANTICLEER

Kelly and Cody’s wedding at Villa Chanticleer in Healdsburg was relaxed, fun, and completely them from beginning to end.

Cody and his guys rolled up in an RV, got ready in the den, ate pizza, and hung out while Kelly spent the morning getting ready with her girls. Nothing felt overly complicated or rushed, which set the tone for the entire day.

They decided to skip a traditional first look but still wanted a private moment together before the ceremony. We tucked them into the bar for a first touch, where they could hold hands and read their personal vows without seeing each other. It gave them that intimate moment together while still saving the first look for when Kelly walked down the aisle.

After the ceremony, we took advantage of the Upper Garden for family photos, the full wedding party, and portraits of Kelly and Cody while the light was filtering beautifully through the trees.

Once the reception kicked off, we completely changed things up. Villa Chanticleer is such a fun place to pull out the flash and create those vintage inspired party photos. The bar, black and white checkered floors, and darker interior are perfect for direct flash, giving their reception photos an entirely different feel from the soft greenery outside.

And then they partied! Lots of dancing, lots of laughs, and plenty of those slightly wild end of the night photos that make you remember exactly how much fun the wedding actually was.

Kelly and Cody’s day is such a great example of why I love photographing weddings at Villa Chanticleer. You can have beautiful gardens and oak trees, intimate moments tucked away inside, and then completely switch gears once the party starts, all without ever leaving the property.

Favorite Photo Locations
at VILLA CHANTICLEER

Upper Garden Area

The Upper Garden is easily one of my favorite places to photograph at Villa Chanticleer. It’s lush, green, and surrounded by mature trees that help filter the light beautifully throughout the day. And if you’re lucky enough to have a late summer wedding, the bright fuchsia crepe myrtles are usually firing off, adding the most incredible pop of color to your photos.

The Bar Area

The bar is one of my favorite spots to switch things up and have a little fun. The black and white checkered floors, vintage details, and old school atmosphere are perfect for direct flash and those playful, slightly edgy party photos. Sit on the bar, grab a drink, bring in the wedding party, and have some fun with it.

It’s also why having a photographer who is comfortable with off camera flash is so important. When the natural light disappears, the photos don’t have to stop. This space comes alive with flash and gives you a completely different look from the gardens and outdoor portraits.

The Lower Drive & Oak Trees

One of my favorite hidden spots is down near the parking area, where a tree lined drive leads toward the ceremony site. Between the canopy of trees, beautiful oaks, stone wall, and open space, it’s a great location for portraits. It also gives us another area to photograph the wedding party separately if you’re saving that first look for the ceremony.

Planning Your VILLA CHANTICLEER WEDDING

A well planned timeline makes a big difference at Villa Chanticleer, and I’ll help you build one that works with the property and the light.

Because the venue sits in a little valley surrounded by mature trees, the sun disappears quickly and there isn’t much of a traditional golden hour. I recommend prioritizing your couple, family, and wedding party portraits right after the ceremony while the Upper Garden still has that beautiful filtered light.

Once the sun goes down, having a photographer who really knows how to use both on camera and off camera flash is key. Villa Chanticleer can get quite dark inside, and good lighting makes all the difference in keeping your reception photos clean, vibrant, and full of life rather than dark or muddy.

  • Build a little breathing room into your timeline. Villa Chanticleer is a relaxed venue, and your photography timeline should feel that way too.
  • Take advantage of the Upper Garden. The greenery, mature trees, and filtered light make this one of my favorite locations for family, wedding party, and couple portraits.
  • Consider a First Look or First Touch. There are several private areas around the property that work beautifully without taking you far from your guests.
  • Don’t wait for golden hour. Villa Chanticleer sits among a lot of mature trees, so the light disappears earlier than you might expect. I’ll help plan your portraits around when the property looks its best.
  • Have some fun once the sun goes down. The bar and reception spaces are perfect for direct flash, off camera flash, and those fun, vintage inspired party photos.
  • Most importantly, enjoy your wedding. Knowing Villa Chanticleer well means I can guide you to the best locations and light without making your wedding day feel like one long photo shoot.
  •

Villa Chanticleer is one of my favorite wedding venues in Healdsburg, especially for couples looking for a beautiful Wine Country setting at a more approachable price point. You get lush gardens, mature oak trees, vintage character, and plenty of space to celebrate without sacrificing the beauty of the setting.

  • Beautiful, lush gardens and mature trees
  • A more affordable Healdsburg wedding venue
  • Plenty of room for larger celebrations
  • Indoor and outdoor ceremony and reception options
  • A spacious indoor reception area for unpredictable weather
  • Wraparound porch for cocktail hour and mingling
  • Vintage Wine Country charm and character
  • Tons of variety for wedding photography

Villa Chanticleer gives you so much of what couples love about a Healdsburg wedding: beautiful surroundings, plenty of space, indoor and outdoor flexibility, and a relaxed Wine Country feel without the price tag of many other venues in the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! I photograph a couple of weddings at Villa Chanticleer each year and am proud to be on their vendor list. Knowing the property, the light, and the best locations for photos makes a big difference in keeping the day moving smoothly.

Villa Chanticleer can also be quite dark indoors, so it’s important to hire a photographer who is experienced and comfortable using flash. I use both on camera and off camera flash throughout receptions to keep photos looking beautiful while still capturing the fun, vintage atmosphere of the space.

Villa Chanticleer doesn’t have a traditional golden hour because of the surrounding trees, so I recommend setting aside plenty of time for portraits right after the ceremony when the Upper Garden is looking its best and the light is filtering beautifully through the trees.

Depending on the time of year, we may also catch some of that last sunlight trickling through the redwoods and oaks below. When we do, I love popping down there for a few quick portraits with that beautiful, woodsy feel before the light disappears.

Most Villa Chanticleer weddings are best covered with 8 to 10 hours of photography, depending on your timeline and whether you’re including getting ready coverage.

Yes. Every couple receives timeline guidance to ensure the day flows smoothly while allowing enough time for portraits, family photos, and all the meaningful moments in between.

More Than Beautiful Photos

Your wedding day isn’t just about creating beautiful portraits.

It’s about preserving the way your parents looked at you before the ceremony, the hugs from lifelong friends, the tears during your vows, your grandparents laughing during cocktail hour, and the joy of celebrating with everyone you love.

Those are the moments that become family history.

My approach is relaxed, unobtrusive, and rooted in genuine connection so you can spend your day celebrating while I document it naturally.
