If you’re searching for a BarnDiva wedding photographer, chances are you’ve fallen in love with everything this iconic Healdsburg venue has to offer. From its lush gardens and charming courtyard to its incredible food and relaxed wine country atmosphere, BarnDiva is one of my favorite places to photograph weddings in Sonoma County.
Sarah and Avery’s wedding was the perfect example of why so many couples choose BarnDiva. It was joyful, colorful, emotional, elegant, and completely centered around the people they love most.
From the moment I arrived, it was clear this day wasn’t about creating a perfectly curated production. It was about celebrating family, friendship, and two people who are deeply loved.

A Warm Summer Wedding in the Heart of Healdsburg
The day unfolded under clear blue skies with the kind of warm Sonoma County summer weather everyone hopes for.
Soft pastel florals wrapped around the ceremony site, adding beautiful color without taking away from the natural beauty of BarnDiva’s gardens. Every reception table was thoughtfully designed with abundant blooms, candlelight, and timeless details that perfectly complemented the venue’s relaxed elegance.
One of my favorite details wasn’t found on a table at all.
Sarah and Avery’s sweet dog, Ellie, was there to witness her parents getting married. Having her quietly wander through parts of the celebration added such a personal touch that made the entire day feel even more meaningful.
These are the moments that make every wedding unique. They can’t be recreated, and they’re often the moments couples treasure most years later.

Surrounded by Their Favorite People
One thing became obvious almost immediately.
Sarah and Avery are incredibly loved.
Their wedding party consisted of twenty of their closest friends, bringing nonstop laughter, energy, and excitement throughout the entire day. Whether we were photographing portraits before the ceremony or celebrating during cocktail hour, there was never a shortage of genuine smiles or spontaneous moments.
Their ceremony was made even more personal by Sarah’s older brother, Whit Johnson, who officiated the wedding. Having a sibling guide them through such an important moment created a ceremony that felt deeply authentic, emotional, and uniquely theirs.
Throughout the day there were hugs, happy tears, roaring laughter, and countless moments that simply couldn’t have been scripted.
As a documentary wedding photographer, those genuine interactions are the moments I live for.

Why BarnDiva Is One of My Favorite Wedding Venues
I’ve photographed weddings throughout Sonoma and Napa Counties, and BarnDiva continues to stand out as one of the most versatile wedding venues in wine country.
The gardens create a naturally beautiful backdrop for ceremonies without requiring elaborate décor.
The courtyard offers wonderful opportunities for candid guest photography during cocktail hour.
The indoor and outdoor spaces flow seamlessly together, allowing guests to relax while still feeling connected to every part of the celebration.
Every corner of the property offers beautiful light, thoughtful architecture, and intimate spaces that photograph effortlessly.
It’s a venue that feels elegant without ever feeling overly formal.

Golden Hour at BarnDiva
One of the things I always watch closely during a BarnDiva wedding is the evening light.
As the sun begins to set, soft golden light filters into portions of the courtyard for only a few short minutes.
Rather than pulling couples away from their guests for an extended portrait session, I like to keep this quick and intentional.
For Sarah and Avery, we slipped away for just a few minutes while the golden light poured into the courtyard.
The result was some of my favorite portraits from the entire wedding day.
Within minutes they were back on the dance floor celebrating with family and friends, never missing the heart of their wedding.

Planning a BarnDiva Wedding? Here Are a Few Photographer Tips
After photographing weddings throughout Sonoma County, here are a few things I recommend for couples getting married at BarnDiva.
Plan family portraits before guests arrive whenever possible. It allows everyone to relax and enjoy cocktail hour together.
Leave 10 to 15 minutes around sunset for portraits. BarnDiva’s evening light is beautiful, and it doesn’t take long to create stunning images.
Trust the gardens. The venue is naturally beautiful. You don’t need to overdecorate every corner.
Give yourself time to enjoy cocktail hour. Some of my favorite documentary photographs happen while guests are mingling, laughing, and celebrating together.
Build breathing room into your timeline. Weddings always feel more relaxed when there is space to simply be present.

My Approach to Photographing Weddings at BarnDiva
Every wedding is different, but my philosophy stays the same.
I want my couples to experience their wedding day, not spend it posing for photographs.
That means helping with timeline planning before the wedding, keeping portraits relaxed and efficient, offering gentle direction when needed, and stepping back throughout the day so genuine moments can unfold naturally.
My goal is for you to spend as much time as possible with your family and friends while knowing every meaningful moment is being documented beautifully.
The photographs become the lasting memories, but the experience of your wedding day matters just as much.

Kind Words from Sarah and Avery
A few days after delivering their sneak peek gallery, I opened a message that completely made my week.
“A sneak peek?! Holly, this would be an incredible album. We can’t wait to see the rest.
There aren’t enough words in the world to describe how grateful we are for you and your team. These pictures are gorgeous. YOU are amazing inside and out. Our families and friends were gushing about you after the welcome party and the wedding. We hit the jackpot hiring you.
Thank you for your kindness, attention to detail, and capturing our day so perfectly.
We’re still in shock that this is just the sneak peek.
We haven’t stopped staring at them.”
Receiving messages like this is one of the greatest gifts of my job.
Beautiful photographs are always the goal, but what matters most is helping couples feel comfortable, cared for, and fully present while celebrating one of the biggest days of their lives.
