Sonoma County Family Photographer | Love Your Photos and Share

If you’re searching for a Sonoma County family photographer who specializes in natural, candid family photos that feel genuine and relaxed, this beautiful spring session at Crane Creek Regional Park is a perfect example of what family photography can look like when we keep things simple, playful, and centered around connection.

When Alyssa and Alex reached out, they shared that their son Ben was approaching his second birthday. They had never done professional family photos together before and felt like this milestone was the perfect reason to finally document this season of life. As any parent knows, those early years seem to fly by in the blink of an eye.

Why Crane Creek is One of My Favorite Sonoma County Family Photo Locations

Spring at Crane Creek is pure magic.

The rolling green hills are at their peak, the oak trees provide beautiful texture and shade, and the open views create the perfect backdrop for timeless family portraits. It’s one of my favorite locations for family photography in Sonoma County because it offers so much variety within a short walk.

For this session, we started a little earlier than I normally would. Since Ben’s bedtime was quickly approaching, we wanted to work around his schedule while still taking advantage of beautiful light. That’s one of the realities of family photography with toddlers. Sometimes the ideal lighting and the ideal toddler mood don’t perfectly align, and parents almost always choose the happy toddler.

Honestly, that’s usually the right call.

Family Photos with a Toddler: Keeping Things Fun and Flexible

One of the biggest concerns parents have before a session is whether their child will cooperate.

The truth is, I never expect toddlers to stand still, smile on command, or follow directions perfectly. In fact, some of my favorite images happen when they’re doing exactly what two-year-olds are supposed to do: exploring, running, laughing, and being curious about the world around them.

Ben was full of personality.

We wandered along the pathways, explored beneath the oak trees, and gave him plenty of room to move. Rather than forcing poses, we focused on interactions between Alyssa, Alex, and Ben. The result was a collection of photographs that felt authentic to who they are as a family.

Finding Beautiful Light in Every Situation

Crane Creek can be incredibly bright in the spring, especially during earlier evening sessions. Knowing how to navigate the location makes all the difference.

We used the oak trees to create pockets of soft light, tucked into shaded pathways when needed, and gradually worked our way into the open fields as the sun softened. By being intentional about where we photographed and how we moved through the park, we were able to create beautiful, flattering images despite starting earlier than the typical golden hour timeframe.

One of my favorite moments happened near the end of the session as we found ourselves meandering through the tall grass with the rolling hills stretching behind us. Ben was completely in his element, and those candid moments became some of the strongest images of the evening.

Why Family Photos Matter

There never seems to be a perfect time to schedule family photos.

Life is busy. Toddlers are unpredictable. Work schedules are packed.

But years from now, your children won’t remember whether the timing was perfect. They’ll remember seeing themselves wrapped in your arms, laughing with you, and being loved.

That’s why I encourage families to document these seasons before they pass. The tiny hands, the belly laughs, the way your child reaches for you when they’re tired — these moments change so quickly.

For Alyssa, Alex, and Ben, this session wasn’t just about celebrating an upcoming second birthday. It was about preserving a chapter of their story that they’ll never get back.

And what a gift that is.
