There’s one thing I tell almost every family before their session:
You do not need to know how to pose.
Seriously.
One of the biggest fears people have before booking a family session is:
“What do we do with our hands?”
“What if my kid melts down?”
“What if we feel awkward in front of the camera?”
And honestly? That’s normal. Almost every family says some version of that before we start.
But here’s the thing. My job as a photographer is not just taking pretty photos. It’s creating an environment where you can actually relax enough to be yourselves.
That’s where the magic happens.
The Best Family Photos Usually Happen In Between
Of course we’ll grab those smiling-at-the-camera photos for grandma. Those matter too.
But some of the sweetest moments happen in between.
Your little one reaching for your hand.
Your partner laughing at your kid being wild.
Walking through a field at sunset.
Holding your baby close while they bury their face into your shoulder.
Tiny hands wrapped around yours.
Those are the photos that tend to mean the most years later.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is connection.
My Biggest Tip? Don’t Overthink It
You don’t need to perform.
You don’t need to force smiles.
You don’t need to know what to do every second.
I guide the entire session.
I’ll help with natural movement, where to stand, what to do with your hands, where the best light is, and how to interact in a way that feels authentic instead of stiff or overly posed.
And yes…
if your arms are hanging awkwardly by your side, I’ll gently fix that too before you start looking like a scarecrow or you’re about to draw a gun. LOL.
A good rule of thumb:
Keep your hands connected somehow.
Touch your partner.
Hold your child.
Wrap an arm around someone.
Keep movement soft and natural.
Connection photographs beautifully.
Family Sessions Should Feel Relaxed
A lot of people assume we’re shooting nonstop for an entire hour.
Not at all.
Some of the best sessions happen when we slow down a little.
We walk.
We explore.
We pause.
We find beautiful pockets of light.
We let your kids be kids.
Sometimes your toddler needs a snack break.
Sometimes we stop because the light pouring through the oak trees is unreal.
Sometimes your child finds flowers and suddenly that becomes the moment.
That flexibility is what creates galleries that feel alive and honest.
Choosing the Right Sonoma County Location
One of the best parts about being a Sonoma County family photographer is how many incredible locations we have right in our backyard.
We truly have everything.
Dreamy redwoods.
Rolling grassy hills.
Oak tree trails.
Coastal cliffs.
Wildflower fields.
Vineyards.
Open space with golden California light.
The best location is usually somewhere that feels meaningful to you.
Maybe it’s where you hike together.
Maybe it’s the Sonoma Coast.
Maybe it’s the park where your kids run wild every weekend.
Maybe you’re visiting Sonoma County from out of town and want that beautiful Wine Country feel.
And if you have no clue where to go?
Don’t worry. I’ve got a huge list of favorite locations depending on the season, lighting, and the vibe you love most.
What To Wear For Family Photos
The biggest thing?
Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.
A few tips that photograph beautifully:
• Stick with soft neutrals, earthy tones, creams, denim, muted greens, browns, soft blues, or warm whites
• Avoid neon colors or large logos
• Coordinate without matching exactly
• Texture photographs beautifully
• Barefoot on the coast is always a vibe
• Flowy dresses move beautifully in the wind and light
• For dads: fitted shirts photograph way better than oversized ones
And honestly?
Kids being slightly imperfect is part of the charm.
Wrinkled shirts.
Windblown hair.
Dirty toddler hands holding flowers.
That’s real life.
That’s beautiful.
Golden Hour Is Everything
One thing to keep in mind when booking your Sonoma County family session:
Sunsets get later in spring and summer.
That dreamy, glowy golden light everyone loves usually happens about an hour before sunset.
So yes… during summer months that can mean a later start time, especially with little ones.
But I promise, that soft golden light filtering through the trees and fields is worth it.
And if your kiddos have an earlier bedtime, I can help recommend locations with better filtered light so we can start a little earlier and still create magic.
You Don’t Need Perfect Kids For Beautiful Photos
I think parents sometimes stress that their children need to behave perfectly for family photos.
Truthfully?
Some of my favorite images happen when kids are just being themselves.
Running.
Laughing.
Snuggling.
Holding stuffed animals.
Picking flowers.
Being shy.
Being wild.
That energy tells the story of this season of life.
And one day, those tiny expressions and little personalities will mean everything to you.
