If you’ve been searching for a Sonoma County family photographer or a Santa Rosa family photographer who keeps things natural, easy, and actually fun… you’re in the right place.
This sweet spring session with Ryan, Laura, and little Reeves is the perfect example of what I love most about family photography out here in Sonoma County. Golden light, wide open space, and moments that feel like real life… just a little more magical.
A Spring Evening at Crane Creek Regional Park
We met at Crane Creek Regional Park in Santa Rosa on a classic April evening. Everything was that fresh, vibrant green… tall grass, oak trees, and that soft golden light starting to peek through.
We kicked things off in the back part of the park where the trees create a natural canopy. It’s one of my favorite ways to start a session. The light is a little softer, kids can warm up, and there’s no pressure right out of the gate.
We wandered, explored, and let Reeves just be Reeves.
Let’s Talk About Golden Hour (and Kids’ Bedtimes 😅)
I’ll be honest… this is always the conversation.
Golden hour (about an hour before sunset) is everything when it comes to that dreamy, glowy light you see in my work. But I also know that when you’ve got a toddler, that timing can feel… ambitious.
For this session, we met about an hour and a half before sunset, which gave us the best of both worlds. We started in softer light, kept things playful, and by the time the sun dropped lower… everyone was already comfortable and in the groove.
Yes, kids can get a little tired.
Yes, moods can shift.
But this is where I come in.
My Approach With Kids (aka I Fully Lean Into the Chaos)
I hear this all the time from parents:
“You’re so good with kids.”
And the truth is… I just meet them where they’re at.
I don’t expect kids to stand still and smile at the camera for an hour. That’s not fun for them… and honestly, it doesn’t create the kind of photos you actually want.
Instead, we play.
We walked the trails, swung arms, did “airplane,” laughed a lot, and just kept things moving. I’ll guide you the whole time, but it never feels forced.
I’m a big kid at heart, and I fully lean into that energy… because that’s where the magic happens.
The In-Between Moments Are Everything
Of course we get the “everyone looking and smiling” photos. Those matter.
But the moments I’m really watching for?
The way Reeves held onto both of their hands.
The laughter when he got tossed in the air.
Those quick little glances between mom and dad.
That’s the good stuff.
We wrapped things up under one of my favorite trees, slowed it down for a bit, and even pulled out a simple blanket for a few cozy moments together. It’s always a nice reset at the end, especially for little ones.
Why Location + Light + Energy Matters
Sessions like this are exactly why I love being a Santa Rosa family photographer.
You don’t need anything overly styled or complicated. Sonoma County already gives us everything we need… beautiful landscapes, soft light, and space to just be together.
My job is to guide you into that light, keep things feeling easy, and capture it in a way that feels true to you.
If you’re looking for a Sonoma County family photographer who will help you feel relaxed, keep your kids engaged, and deliver images that feel natural and full of life… I’d love to work with you.
Let’s make it fun, a little wild, and really, really beautiful. ✨
