How to Prepare for Your Engagement Session | Sonoma County | Photos and Experience You Will Love

Sonoma County Engagement Photographer Guide

If you’ve never had professional photos taken together, you’re not alone. Most couples show up to their engagement session saying some version of, “We’re awkward in front of the camera.” Totally normal. My job is to make sure you don’t feel that way for long.

Here’s exactly how to prep, what actually matters, and what the experience will feel like from start to finish.

What to Wear (Without Overthinking It)

Start here because it’s usually the biggest stressor.

Think coordinated, not matching. You want your outfits to feel like they live in the same world without looking like a uniform.

A few go-to tips:

  • Stick to neutrals and earthy tones (creams, tans, olive, soft blues)
  • Avoid loud logos or busy patterns
  • Flowy dresses photograph beautifully and add movement
  • Layers and texture always elevate photos (jackets, knits, linen)

And most importantly: wear something that feels like you. If you’re tugging at it or adjusting it constantly, it’ll show.

Choose a Location That Fits Your Vibe

This is where the magic really happens.

In Sonoma County, you’ve got options:

  • Coastal cliffs and beaches for something dramatic and windswept
  • Redwoods for that moody, intimate feel
  • Open fields and vineyards for soft, golden light

I always help guide this based on your personalities and the overall feel you’re drawn to. If you’re dreaming of the coast, we’ll just keep an eye on wind and fog and time it right.

If one of these stands out, I’m happy to share full galleries so you can really get a feel for how your session could look there. And if you’re not sure yet, no stress, I’ll help you land on the perfect spot based on your vibe.

Timing Is Everything (Hello, Golden Hour)

The best light happens about an hour before sunset. That soft, glowy, flattering light you see in my work? That’s not an accident.

Sessions are typically scheduled around that window so we get:

  • Warm skin tones
  • Soft shadows
  • That dreamy golden-to-blue hour transition

Trust me on timing. It makes a huge difference.

What It Actually Feels Like During the Session

This is the part people are always surprised by.

It’s not stiff. It’s not overly posed. And you’re not going to be standing there wondering what to do with your hands.

I’ll guide you the entire time, but in a way that feels natural. Think movement, prompts, and real interaction rather than “stand here and smile.”

You’ll:

  • Walk, laugh, move around
  • Get a little goofy (yes, even the camera-shy partner)
  • Forget the camera is there about 10 minutes in

The goal is candid, real moments that actually feel like you.

A Few Simple Ways to Prep Before You Arrive

Nothing complicated, just small things that make a big difference:

  • Eat beforehand (no one wants to be hangry in photos)
  • Bring a second outfit if you want variety
  • Clean nails, hydrated skin, wrinkle-free clothes
  • Give yourself extra time so you’re not rushed

And if you’re nervous? Totally fine. I expect that. It always melts away quickly.

What Happens After Your Session

Within a couple of days, you’ll get your first proofs. From there:

  • You’ll select your favorites
  • I’ll go in and do in-depth retouching on those
  • You’ll receive a final, polished gallery ready for download and prints

Easy, streamlined, and actually fun.

The Bottom Line

Your engagement session isn’t about being perfect. It’s about capturing your dynamic, your energy, and the way you naturally are together.

You don’t need to know how to pose. You don’t need to “be good at photos.”
You just need to show up, trust the process, and be yourselves.

I’ve got the rest covered.
