There’s something about the Sonoma Coast that just settles people.
Maybe it’s the rhythm of the ocean, or the way the light softens everything right when you need it to. Maybe it’s the cliffs, the textures, the fact that nothing ever looks the same twice out there.
Kelly and Cody knew they wanted the coast for their engagement session, and honestly… it fits them. Easy, grounded, a little adventurous, and just really good together.
We started a bit inland, which is something I love doing when it makes sense. On the way out toward Bodega Head, we pulled off onto a quiet country road and incorporated Cody’s uncle’s vintage car. It added this personal layer that just made the whole session feel more them—not overly styled, not forced, just meaningful.
By the time we got to the coast, it was one of those rare Sonoma County days where everything lines up. The wind wasn’t doing the usual chaotic thing, the succulents were popping, and the light… just steady and golden in that way you can’t plan, but always hope for.
And here’s the thing I always tell my couples—especially during engagement sessions:
It’s not about knowing what to do with your hands or how to “pose.”
It’s about letting go a little.
Walking together. Laughing when something feels awkward. Leaning in instead of pulling away. Just being with your person and trusting that I’ve got you.
Kelly and Cody did exactly that.
There were moments where they were wrapped up in each other, completely unaware of me. Moments where they laughed mid-movement. Moments where everything slowed down just enough to feel it.
That’s where the good stuff lives.
As a Sonoma County engagement photographer, I’ve shot in a lot of beautiful places—but Bodega Head always delivers in a way that feels a little deeper than just a pretty backdrop. It gives you space. Movement. Texture. And when the light shows up the way it did for this session, it just brings everything together.
If you’re planning your own engagement session and feel a little unsure about what it’s supposed to look like, here’s your reminder:
It doesn’t need to be perfect.
It just needs to feel like you.
The rest tends to fall into place.
Kelly and Cody are getting married this September, and if this session was any indication, it’s going to be something really special.
