There are few places quite like Sea Ranch for a proposal.
Miles of rugged Northern California coastline, golden grass, windswept bluffs, beautiful architecture, old barns and that wild Pacific Ocean stretching out behind you. It is romantic without trying too hard, which is exactly why I love photographing proposals here.
Adam and Sierra traveled all the way from Miami for a few days on the Northern California coast. They love this part of California and booked one of the homes at The Sea Ranch Lodge for their getaway.
What Sierra didn’t know was that Adam had a little more planned than hiking, exploring and dinner by the ocean.

Adam + Sierra’s Sea Ranch Proposal
After spending a couple of days hiking and enjoying Sea Ranch, Adam made dinner reservations at The Sea Ranch Lodge restaurant for Friday night.
But before dinner, they took a walk out toward the bluffs at sunset.
And waiting up on the hillside was me.
Incognito.
With a picnic basket.
Pretending I was simply enjoying a perfectly normal evening on the Sonoma Coast while secretly keeping an eye on Adam and waiting for him to make his move.
As the sun started dropping toward the Pacific, Adam brought Sierra out onto the bluff, got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.
She said yes.
And I got to photograph the whole thing.
The surprise. The reaction. The hugs. The ring. And those first few minutes of realizing that they were officially engaged.

Proposal Photos Around The Sea Ranch Lodge
After giving Adam and Sierra a little time to soak everything in, we wandered around The Sea Ranch Lodge property for what essentially became their first engagement session.
This is one of my favorite things about photographing proposals.
The proposal itself happens incredibly fast, but we don’t stop there.
Once you’ve had a minute to celebrate, we can spend some time exploring and creating photographs that tell more of the story.
Sea Ranch gives us so much variety without having to go far.
We photographed Adam and Sierra along the ocean bluffs, through the dry golden grass and around some of the beautiful architecture that makes Sea Ranch so recognizable. We used the fences, the old barn, the open landscape and, of course, that gorgeous golden coastal light.
Nothing felt overly posed or formal. We walked, talked, laughed and let them enjoy the fact that they had just gotten engaged.
By the time they headed to dinner, they had an entire collection of photographs to remember the evening.

Why Sea Ranch Is Such a Beautiful Place to Propose
If you’re thinking about proposing somewhere along the Northern California coast, Sea Ranch is pretty hard to beat.
It feels secluded and peaceful while still giving you access to some incredible scenery. Depending on the location and time of year, you can have ocean cliffs, grassy meadows, trails, coastal trees, barns and iconic Sea Ranch architecture all within a relatively small area.
The light can be beautiful in the evening, especially when we get one of those clear Sonoma Coast sunsets.
And if you’re staying at The Sea Ranch Lodge or one of the nearby homes, you can make the proposal part of an entire weekend instead of having it feel like one isolated event.
Go hiking. Explore the coast. Have a great dinner. Stay somewhere beautiful.
And somewhere in the middle of all of it, get engaged.

What Happens When You Hire Me to Photograph Your Proposal?
I photograph proposals a little differently depending on the couple and location because I want the actual moment to feel like yours.
Beforehand, we’ll work together on the plan.
We’ll talk about location, timing, light and exactly where you should stand. I’ll help you figure out the logistics so you aren’t wandering around wondering where you’re supposed to propose while simultaneously trying not to act suspicious.
Then I’ll get into position before you arrive.
Sometimes I’m hiding.
Sometimes I’m pretending to photograph the landscape.
And apparently sometimes I’m having a fake picnic on a hillside.
Whatever it takes.
Once you propose, I’ll photograph the moment as it naturally happens and then give you a little space to actually enjoy it.
Afterward, we’ll spend some time taking relaxed portraits together. Think of it as a mini engagement session while you’re still riding that just engaged high.
Those photographs are perfect for announcing your engagement to friends and family, printing for your home, using on a save the date or even turning into your Christmas card later that year.

More importantly, you’ll have photographs of one of those moments in life that goes by incredibly fast.
Planning a Sea Ranch Proposal
If you’re planning a proposal at Sea Ranch, timing matters.
I generally love photographing here in the late afternoon and around sunset because the lower light works beautifully with the grass, coastline and ocean.
But Sea Ranch is also the Northern California coast, which means weather can have a personality of its own.
Fog, wind and clouds are part of being out here, so I always keep an eye on the forecast and help my clients come up with a plan that makes sense for the day.
I can also help you choose a location based on the type of proposal you’re envisioning. Maybe you want dramatic ocean cliffs. Maybe you want something more private. Maybe you’re staying at The Sea Ranch Lodge and want to incorporate the property into your photographs.
You don’t have to figure all of that out alone.

Sonoma County Proposal Photographer
I photograph proposals throughout Sonoma County and along the Northern California coast, including Sea Ranch, the Sonoma Coast, Bodega Bay and surrounding areas.
Whether you’re traveling to Northern California for a weekend away or you live here and want to plan something close to home, I can help you put together a proposal that photographs beautifully while still feeling natural and true to the two of you.
And yes, I am very comfortable hiding in bushes, lurking on hillsides and pretending I have absolutely no idea who you are until the ring comes out.
Adam and Sierra, congratulations.
What an absolutely gorgeous way to begin this next chapter.
From Miami to the bluffs of Sea Ranch, with the Pacific Ocean behind you and dinner waiting at The Sea Ranch Lodge, I’d say you two did this one right.
