A Beautiful Backyard Garden Wedding in Sonoma

There is something incredibly special about a backyard wedding.

No ballroom. No grand entrance. No pressure to make it anything other than a reflection of the people getting married.

That was exactly Zoe and Reed’s vision.

Nestled in a lush Sonoma garden surrounded by blooming flowers, peach trees, strawberries, towering oak trees, and generations of family and friends, their wedding felt relaxed, heartfelt, and wonderfully personal. It reminded me so much of my own wedding day, and those are always the celebrations that stay with me long after I deliver the gallery.

Why Backyard Weddings in Sonoma Are So Special

One of the greatest gifts of getting married at home or on a private property is the freedom to create a wedding that feels completely like you.

Instead of rushing from one location to another, Zoe and Reed chose to spend their day surrounded by the people they love most. Guests wandered through the gardens, enjoyed cocktails beneath century old oak trees, and celebrated in a setting that already held meaning before the wedding day even began.

The garden wasn’t simply where the wedding happened.

It became part of the story.

More Than Just Beautiful Photos

One thing many couples don’t realize is that wedding photography begins long before the camera comes out.

Months before the wedding, I worked alongside Zoe and Reed to help create a timeline that allowed the day to unfold naturally.

We talked through logistics, lighting, guest flow, family portraits, and how to preserve plenty of time for genuine moments rather than feeling like the day revolved around photos.

My goal is always the same.

Help couples experience their wedding instead of feeling like they’re performing for it.

Why I Photograph Every Wedding With a Team

For Zoe and Reed’s wedding, I brought one of my incredible associate photographers alongside me.

Having two photographers meant we could tell a much fuller story.

While one of us documented the quiet moments of anticipation, the other captured guests arriving, children exploring the gardens, hugs between family members, and all of the little interactions that often become couples’ favorite photographs later.

Nothing important was missed.

Documentary Wedding Photography That Feels Like Your Memories

Zoe and Reed weren’t interested in spending hours posing.

They wanted photographs that reflected the joy of the day.

The conversations.

The laughter.

The hugs.

The tears.

The spontaneous dance moves.

The grandparents watching from the sidelines.

The little kids running barefoot through the grass.

Those are the moments that become family history.

Of course we created beautiful portraits together, but the heartbeat of this wedding lives in the candid moments shared between the people who love them most.

Showing the Beauty of the Entire Property

One of my favorite parts of the day was bringing the drone into the air for a few carefully planned photographs.

From above, you could truly appreciate the property.

The winding garden paths.

The towering oak trees.

The ceremony tucked beneath their branches.

The pool.

The fruit trees.

The gardens in bloom.

Those images help tell the complete story of a place in a way that simply isn’t possible from the ground.

Ending the Night Exactly Right

Instead of ending coverage after dinner, Zoe and Reed asked us to stay for the party.

I’m so glad they did.

Some of the most joyful photographs happened after the formalities were over.

Friends filled the dance floor.

Parents laughed with their children.

Guests sang at the top of their lungs.

Everyone forgot the cameras were even there.

Those photographs don’t just show what happened.

They bring you back to exactly how it felt.
